Operating a lift truck safely and efficiently is a highly skilled job that requires a good standard of training.  But what should operations managers look for when selecting the right equipment training provider?

A good place to start is to check whether the training provider has a good reputation in the industry.  Do they have customer testimonies or reviews to reference? Find out what operations similar to yours have said about the quality of training and the results delivered.

Is the training provider accredited by a reputable accrediting body?  This can immediately help to identify a quality provider who will deliver the right training, in the right way, which also complies with current legislation.

Check that the instructors are not only fully qualified, but also regularly audited to ensure their qualifications and skills are up to date. Auditing should be carried out by an external body to ensure that all the necessary credentials are met.

How does the instructor deliver the training? Will your operators feel engaged? One of the keys to operators truly benefiting from training is to make sure that they are interested in what they are learning and actually enjoying the process. Can the provider offer bespoke courses to cater to your specific operator and business needs?

Off-the-shelf training can’t always help to achieve your business objectives alone. Follow up activity to help keep the training in mind can be very effective. Use HealthChecks, in-house driver competitions and other incentives to keep up the operators’ good work and to keep what they have learnt at front of mind.
